A number of English towns were founded in the early 10th century and during the Edwardian period it became the fashion to celebrate the town’s millenary by staging a spectacular historic pageant. Hertford’s turn came in 1914 and, after four months of hectic preparation, its grand pageant took place at the end of June – just a few weeks before the outbreak of the First World War.

Hertford's Grand Pageant 1914 tells the story of this event. It describes how the people of this small county town came together to make all the costumes and props, and to take part in the performance itself. It uses a host of photos and memorabilia to recreate the events which took place in the historic setting of Hertford Castle during Pageant Week. And along the way we meet a gallery of colourful characters and gain an insight into how a town like Hertford was run at that time.
