On Hertford and its Environs 1775

A portrait in verse of Hertford and the surrounding countryside, written by Thomas Green (1719-91)

Edited by Jean Purkis and Philip Sheail

Thomas Green lived in Hertford from 1748 to 1791. He was organist at All Saints’ Church, taught music and drawing in the local schools, and organised public concerts.

Thomas was also an amateur poet and in 1775 he composed a lengthy piece called On Hertford and its Environs. The poem gives us a colourful insight into the life and appearance of this small county town in the 18th century.

The poem is reproduced in full in this book, together with explanatory notes, illustrations and maps.

On Hertford and its Environs 1775 is published in softback, 56 pages, 23 b&w prints, 3 maps
